Netgear WG111 v3 usb adpator connnection / speed issues in Ubuntu
I bought a new Netgear WG111 v3 USB wireless adaptor.
It was detected first time in Ubuntu 10.10 and established a connection to my router immediately. Brilliant, I wish Windows was this quick!!

However after about 10 minutes I noticed poor performance of this adaptor, so I ran a speed check at http://www.broadbandspeedchecker.co.uk/

I was surprised to see I was only getting between 512kb and 1mb download speed, which explained why things where taking longer than usual to download.

After some searching, I ended up ubuntu forums. Some users suggested I download the linux-firmware-nonfree package. I don't know what the hell this is, but with all things Ubuntu I just opened the terminal and issued the following command.

sudo apt-get install linux-firmware-nonfree

After installation I removed my the USB wireless adaptor, then restarted Ubuntu. Once Ubuntu had restarted I plugged the adaptor back in.

I went back to http://www.broadbandspeedchecker.co.uk/ and I was up and running at 6mb download. Problem solved.
